The Evolution of Electrical Insulation Paper
So, what do paper and electricity have in common? Most would say, not much. However, for over 100 years, there has been a type of paper which has played a key role in the development of electrical systems across the world. This is electrical insulation paper.
Early Origins
The start of the 20th century brought about the widespread use of high-voltage transformers. These new transformers needed special materials to insulate their powerful cores and windings. This demand led to the development of pressboard, a basic material formed by compressing layers of paper. Though effective for its time, as electrical technology advanced, the shortcomings of pressboard were soon laid bare.
Revolutionizing Transformer Insulation
In the late 1920s, a breakthrough occurred in the transformer industry. Hans Tschudi-Faude, a pioneer in the field, recognized the need for a more resilient insulating material. And thus, Transformerboard was born. This material, unlike its predecessors, was manufactured from premium-grade cellulose, devoid of impurities, and boasted superior electrical properties. Transformerboard could be thoroughly dried, degassed, and even infused with oil for improved performance.
Over the next few decades, Transformerboard gained widespread adoption. Improvements in production techniques led to it becoming the industry standard. Transformers, cables, and various high-voltage equipment increasingly relied on this paper-based powerhouse for insulation.
Lasting Impact and Future Prospects
In the years to come, newer insulation materials came about, but the relevance of electrical insulation paper never diminished. Its unbeatable combination of cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and eco-friendliness ensured its continued use across various industries. Additionally, ongoing research means that electrical insulation paper will only get better with time.
